[He smiles softly; it's nice to see her face again, but the news surprises him.]

Is he still there?

[ The wide spread to her smile softens in response, her head ducking down for a moment. One finger lightly slides over the paper, avoiding the lines. ]

No -- it's about as safe for him as it is for you. [ Aka he's Seelie. ] But I told him to keep an eye out for you and Bucky on his way back, so don't freak out if he does happen to find you.

As much as the Seelie seem to like you, I'm starting to think you really are in the wrong castle. Anyway, thanks.

All the Seelie, hm?

[ Flirting: easier when no one is in possible mortal danger and/or in danger of getting involved in an orgy. ]

It's a stupid way to separate people anyway. I think change is good so I have to hang out with trolls? Really?

[ She knows there's likely more to it than that -- her latest job, for instance -- but still. ]

I agree with that. Especially the ones who were drafted to begin with.

[He takes a deep breath.]

[ Oh, of course. She shakes her head a little, but doesn't say anything; considering the state of things, she has a feeling he may regret it already. ]

I didn't even get a choice. One minute I'm minding my own business, the next I've got an imp yanking me by the hair.

[He frowns at that, because that's not serving; that's kidnapping.]

I guess you'd go back home if you could.

It isn't all bad, here. Other than the war.

[ She sighs a little. ]

I should want to go home. And I do, but- I'd miss the things I've seen. And the people. Especially the people.

War is definitely a downside.

[Steve's expression softens, and he looks forward for a few seconds.]

The people are nice. And to tell you the truth, I don't feel much more out of place here than I do in my own world.

There's wars back home, too. I'm just- not on the front lines in them. They seem less... real.

[ Which is horrible. It's so easy to ignore them, though, hearing about them only on the news. ]

You feel out of place there?

Seems like there's always a war going on somewhere.

[Which is disappointing. But as long as there are bullies, he supposes there'll always be wars.]

Yeah, I sort of [He grimaces.] missed out on about seventy years. Things changed. Some things, anyway.

... Can I ask how that happened?

[ because seriously ]

I crashed a plane into the ocean and took a little nap on ice.

[You know, the usual.]

That should have killed you. [ Beat. She is in a fairy world, after all. ] In my world, anyway.

Though I'm glad it didn't.

It would've killed most people in my world too. I'm glad it didn't too.

[ He may feel out of place back home, but Ariadne rather likes him living and enjoying it. Still, Steve losing seventy years reminds her too much of Cobb and Mal living out a decade in a dream, only to wake up young, one to wake up and be convinced that the dream was real. ]

I don't know if missing those years would be better or worse than thinking you lived them, only to find out that it wasn't real.

[It's an odd comparison; too odd to be random.]

I'm not sure either. Are you talking from experience here?

[ What are you talking about she's totally... subtle........ ]

Not my experience. It happened to a friend.

[A friend. He's not sure he believes that, but he keeps it to himself.]

I wonder if your friend would think that this is just a dream too.

He probably would.

[ The use of the word 'dream' is very specific, but it's not a hard leap to make; still, it reminds her that she shouldn't talk much about Cobb or the others. ]

It is all pretty hard to believe.

Lots of things used to be hard for me to believe. These days...I'd probably believe just about anything.

Besides, it feels real.

Most dreams do.

[ The dreams she creates certainly do. ]

Though I have to admit, I don't usually dream about finding men in pajamas in my hallway.

So do you dream about them being somewhere else or wearing something else?

[Steve smiles before seeming to reconsider his joke.]
