We used to do this a lot. My apartment back in Brooklyn didn't get warm until June.
[It's more than just reminiscing. He wants to keep Bucky thinking, awake.]
You used to argue with my landlord, but that cracked window never did get repaired.
no subject
I... [He's about to say he doesn't remember, but then he realizes he does, the memories swimming to the surface slowly, as if through something thick and viscous.] I remember.
no subject
Really? Talk to me about it.
[To gauge how much he remembers. To keep him alert and thinking and talking. He feels Bucky's weight against his shoulder and moves his arm to wrap around him.]
no subject
I wanted... to replace the window myself. But you wouldn't let me.
[He knows he shouldn't close his eyes, but they feel heavy. His blinks are slow.]
no subject
I knew you didn't have the money, and I was afraid of where you might get it.
[Bucky wasn't the least bit afraid of hard work, when there was work to be found. But Steve was sick a lot, and he was short on rent a lot, and somehow his friend always had a couple of bucks to pitch in.]
Do you remember where you did get it sometimes?
[Steve never actually came right out and asked back then, not that Bucky would've told him anyway. All he could do was worry about it.]
no subject
No.
[He's leaning against Steve a little more heavily now, without even realizing it.]
no subject
[Steve starts to joke about it, until he feels Bucky's weight pressing a little more against him. He gives him a gentle shake, trying to ignore the way it's getting harder to feel his own fingers and toes.]
Still with me, Bucky? I need you to stay awake for as long as you can, okay?
no subject
Trying...
[He swallows hard, muttering.]
I liked it better when it happened fast.
no subject
Talking about winters in Brooklyn can't be helping. Maybe talking about some warmer weather will.]
Do you remember anything about the summers? We used to go up on the roof at night. It was easier to breathe up there.
no subject
So tired.]
Hot... humid...
[He remembers it being that way, even if he can't remember what it felt like.]
no subject
[They used to complain about it back then, but right now there's something wistful in Steve's voice as he talks about it.
There's something distracted too. He's reached for his locket, texting something out.]
Stay awake just a little longer, okay? Gonna get you warmed up.
no subject
[His entire body is shutting down, and he can feel it. It's a testament to his willpower that he's managed to fight it off for this long. His eyelids are so heavy... he feels more tired than he can remember ever feeling before.
His eyes start to slide shut.]
no subject
It doesn't matter. He can't let Bucky slip back into the freeze, not when he's had to endure it so much. Steve cups his face in his hands, like he can somehow send the warmth from his own body into his friend's]
Johnny's coming. He said he can warm you up, and the other people here too. I'm gonna go look for him, you just - Bucky?
no subject
[He breathes out the name, but it's his last word. His eyes slide shut all the way and he succumbs to the cold, as gently and easily as falling asleep.]
