[That feeling threatens to drown him. He takes a deep, shuddering breath, and has an instinct.

Before he can think too much about it, he leans his head to rest on Steve's shoulder. He wants... he wants so much. He wants so much he's not sure he's allowed to have, but Steve... Steve keeps staying with him.]

[Steve's surprised by the move. He swallows hard, because he wants too. But his wants come secondary to Bucky's wants and needs.

But for right now, it feels okay. Like they're on the same page and therefore he's allowed. Steve shifts gently, sliding his arm behind Bucky's back to hold him in place.]

Or we could just stay like this instead. I think I'd like that. What about you, Buck?

[wipedclean]

[Steve slides an arm around him and he takes that as a signal that it's okay, so he wraps his arms around Steve, burying his face in Steve's shoulder and trying to keep breathing.

It's his birthday.

It's his birthday and he's alive and he's free, but he's not really free, not when Hydra's still got a hold of his brain even they're gone.]

Are you okay?

[He knows that there's probably no easy answer to that question, that it could just as likely be a 'no' as a 'yes'. Maybe both. Steve settles, the slide of his hand over Bucky's back encouraging him to rest more of his weight against him. He can handle it now, and that's one of the best things the serum ever gave him.

Steve frowns at his next question.]

Did I upset you?

[wipedclean]

[He swallows, takes a breath.]

I'm... I don't know.

[Because he really doesn't, and he can't lie about that. He still hasn't even tried to see if he can lie about anything, but that's not the point right now.]

Not your fault.

[It's not Steve who upset him, if he's upset at all. He doesn't know. He doesn't know what this feeling is, or what it's doing to him. He just knows he doesn't want to let him go.]

[He doesn't have to. Steve certainly won't pull away or push him away. The Drabwurld might've given him a depth of relationships that he didn't have before, but Bucky's the one who really taught him about affection. Friendship. Brotherhood. Steve hasn't forgotten, and he won't.]

I hope you're okay - I want you to be. Because you mean a lot to me. [Steve smiles a little, leaning his head back to look up at the ceiling.] I never told you, but you're the first person I ever loved. Besides my ma, of course. And she did give me a better nickname.

[He swallows tightly as he listens to Steve's words.]

But I'm not...

[The words are out before he can stop them, and shuts his mouth, shaking his head into Steve's shoulder.

I'm not the same.

They've had this argument before, with no resolution, and he's not sure he wants to have it again, but nothing's changed. He's still... a weapon without someone to wield him.]

I still do.

[Because they have had this conversation before, enough for Steve to know what he almost said. And a thousand times of him saying anything can't combat a single time of Bucky telling himself the opposite. Not if he's dead set on believing it. How many times did Bucky tell him he had nothing to prove? And he still let Erskine pump him full of the unknown.]

I hope you care about me. I have a birthday coming up pretty soon myself.

[wipedclean]

[His breaths come unevenly, like his body is trying to cry but won't let it out completely.

I hope you care about me.

Is that what he's feeling? It must be.

It makes sense. It makes sense in a way that nothing else apart from missions have for a while.]

[He breathes it out, and it feels right when he says it, and his hold on Steve tightens a little.]

[Steve breathes out with him, cups the back of his head, moves his hand down between his shoulder blades. It's like he needs to constantly be touching Bucky to know that he's real.

He spent two of his birthdays thinking that he was dead. Steve never wants to go through one of those again.]

More than you like Colonel Phillips or Sam's wings? [There's a smile in his voice.] Be honest, I can take it.

[He's been without... contact like this, like this, for so long. He sinks into Steve's hold and is thankful for it, glad of it.]

More than anything.

[He says it quietly, knowing it's true, feeling it more clearly than he's felt anything in a while.]

[There's a sudden swell of that same mixture of happiness and pain that Bucky probably feels in his own chest. Steve's nearly overwhelmed by it. His eyes cloud over, and he turns his head a little to brush the welling tears against Bucky's shoulder.]

I like you more than anything too. [If he had to choose...well, how could there even be a choice? More than his own life. There's just no question about it. He laughs softly.] I hope Sam's not the jealous type.

[wipedclean]

[He huffs out a small sound that could almost be a laugh into Steve's shoulder.]

Thank you.

[Because he's still not sure if Steve really understands, but he hasn't given up yet. And that's... amazing.]

[Not a clue about what Bucky's thanking him for. But it doesn't matter.]

I can draw you a better picture. Anything you want.

[It comes out a little muffled, since his face is still mostly pressed into Steve's shoulder. But he's still not letting go.]

[Steve sighs, but it's way too dramatic to be genuine.]

There goes my retirement plan. I was thinking about making a living at doing caricatures.

[He finally pulls back to give Steve a Look.]

You want me to frame it?

[That mock exasperation was definitely all Bucky.]

[Is that sass? Steve better go outside and scoop up some snow for that burn. He just stares at him for a moment before smirking.]

And it wouldn't kill you to put a velvet rope around it like they do in museums.

[He rolls his eyes. He's used up his sassing back meter for the day, so he doesn't have a response, just shaking his head a little instead before leaning his head back on Steve's shoulder.

This is nice. He likes this.

And hell. It's his birthday. If he wants to stay like this he can, Steve said so.]

[Steve closes his eyes, sighing softly. It is his birthday, and he can stay like this all day if he wants to. If Sam comes in, he can just-

Well, it's Sam. He'd probably hug them both.]
